What Should You Do If a Bracket on Your Braces Breaks?

If a bracket on your your braces should accidentally break, don’t panic. There are things you can do to keep your smile on track. It is not uncommon for a bracket to break, but it is important to handle the situation. We have a few tips to help you handle this occurrence as quickly and carefully as possible. For example:

The first thing you will want to do is to check out the damage. Does the bracket still have contact with the wire? If it does, keep it in place and stabilize it by covering it with a piece of orthodontic wax. If it doesn’t, take the bracket out of your mouth and keep it in a safe place. Make sure to bring it with you to your next appointment. If the bracket slid out of place when it broke, you will want to move it back into position with a cotton swab.

The next thing you will want to do is control the situation. The broken bracket may cause a wire to protrude out of place. If this happens, it’s best to clip the wire with a pair of fingernail clippers. As you do this, make sure to clip the wire as close to the bracket as possible. You want to avoid having cuts inside your mouth.

And finally, please go ahead and make an appointment with Dr. Rollins as soon as you can. If you delay treatment, your smile transformation could also be delayed. So, don’t be hesitant to call our office and explain the situation to our team so we can get you in as soon as possible if necessary.
