When should my child have an orthodontic consultation?
We suggest that you bring your child to see Drs. Rollins, Petersen and Larson for a consultation when they are seven-years-old. We will determine whether they need the early orthodontic treatment that helps to guide the growth of their jawbones into an optimal position.
How long is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment generally takes about 18-24 months to complete. However, this depends on the severity of your tooth alignment problems. Some treatments can take as little as six months.
Do braces hurt?
Your teeth may feel sore when you first receive braces and when you visit us to have them tightened, but this discomfort goes away after a few days. You may also develop oral sores when you first have braces, but applying an orthodontic wax can relieve discomfort.
Do I still need to visit the dentist if I have braces?
Cleaning your teeth while wearing braces becomes more difficult, so routine checkups to a dental office become even more important while you undergo an orthodontic treatment.
Will braces prevent me from playing sports, singing, or playing an instrument?
You will need a period of adjustment after you first receive braces, but soon you will be able to complete your favorite activities once again. If you play sports, then we highly recommend wearing a mouth guard to protect your teeth and braces from damage.
