Before undergoing gingival contouring, our skilled orthodontist will discuss precisely where the gum reshaping will occur, giving you a clear vision of your post-surgery smile.
On the flip side, gums that are too high can expose the roots of your teeth, paving the way for bacteria to infiltrate and cause decay. When left untreated, this can eventually lead to tooth and/or bone loss (in teeth and facial bones). In some cases, gum recession could signal periodontal disease, which may require simultaneous treatment alongside gum contouring for the best results.

The good news is that gingival contouring is typically a straightforward process that often only requires a single visit to our office. Most patients find that a local anesthetic is sufficient, and you can return home right after the procedure. Expect some soreness post-surgery, but the gums typically heal very quickly.
During recovery, we recommend consuming soft foods until your gums are fully healed, and in some cases, over-the-counter pain medication may be advised. Our dentist will provide you with specialized instructions on how to brush and floss without causing harm to your gums.
