Braces for Children, Teens, & Adults Know the difference?

For generations, having braces has been a typical part of an adolescent’s life. Many children wear braces as a staple in their pre-teen and teen years. However, orthodontia has changed. At Rollins & Petersen Orthodontics in Arizona, our professionals provide care for children, teens, and adults to achieve the smile they desire.

Children

In years past, children didn’t visit an orthodontist until they were at least 10 or 11 years old. Our professionals recommend that the first visit occurs by age 7.

At this age, children are developing permanent teeth, and the orthodontist can determine if there are any problems. In some children, the orthodontist may recognize that Invisalign teen treatment is needed.

Phase 1 Treatment

The purpose of Phase 1 Treatment is to address problems with the child’s jaw. Phase 1 Treatment may prevent the child from needing additional treatment later or reduce the amount of treatment he or she needs.

Teens and Adults

Adolescence is considered the ideal time for braces because, during this window, the permanent teeth have all grown in but the head is still growing. This does not mean that adults are not candidates for braces. Many adults who did not have braces as teenagers or whose teeth shifted after their braces were removed may still improve their smiles with braces.

Braces

Orthodontic patients who need braces have a few options. The first one is traditional metal braces. Metal braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more effective than the ones worn by previous generations of patients.

Ceramic braces are either clear or tooth-colored. They work the same way that traditional bracket braces work but are less noticeable.

Aligners are clear trays that are worn over the teeth. The trays slowly move the teeth into the correct positions. Aligners can be removed for eating and drinking and for brushing teeth.

Orthodontic Appliances for Children, Teens, and Adults

Braces are not the only treatments that orthodontists provide. While braces work well for correcting bite problems, other appliances correct different issues.

For children, teens, and adults who plays sports, especially contact sports, may be fitted for a mouth guard. A mouth guard protects the teeth from being damaged if an athlete falls down or gets hit in the mouth.

A patient with a severe overbite may be given a headgear. Headgear is worn outside the mouth. Children and teens are more likely to use a headgear than adults.

A patient who grinds their teeth in their sleep may benefit from a night guard. A night guard keeps the teeth from touching each other so they do not become worn down or damaged.
